March 20th & 27th...Blair's Big Dumb Planet Algol Adventure?

So March 21st-27th is International Traditional Gaming Week and I've been very jealous of Jeff Rient's Big Dumb Tekumel Adventure at this year's Winter War. Also, Labyrinth Lord Advanced Edition Companion has just been released. So I'm considering doing two "open" Planet Algol games in "public/semi-public" locales in order to celebrate ITGW...with Blair's Big Dumb Planet Algol Adventures utilizing Advanced Labyrinth Lord.

There is a selfish motivation for this...Planet Algol need's it's own "Castle Blackmoor/Castle Greyhawk" iconic dungeon and what better motivation to create a big gonzo fun dungeon that the very public ordeal of an "open game?" Plus, DMing for a bunch of folks that aren't part of my insular bohemian gaming group should be an interesting experience that I could learn from.

Hopefully my momentum continues and this becomes a reality. If this happens, hopefully Ancientvaults, Yezmyr and some of the Red Box Vancouver crew could make it for on eof these games ....

Cue the Star Trek fighting music...

  1. You could always come to NTRPG Con in June too!

  2. That is an awesome plan! I'm curious how new players will deal with Algol.
Are you are planing a straight up crawl?
I'll be sure to contribute a stack of crisp custom Algol character sheets for all the players.
FYI - Strategies on Main carries RPGs and has game rooms at the back. I know they've hosted events in the past.

  3. @Chainsaw: I'd love to, especially as my parents own property in Texas, maybe make it part of a family vacation.

@B.Portly: I'm strongly leaning towards a straight up crawl, with the "framing device" pretty much entirely lifted from Jeff's Tekumel game.
The character sheets should have portraits...especially awful portraits made by Peter and I!

  4. I am totally up for this, and so are one or two of the Yezmyrians. I'm just waiting for the Olympics to pass before attempting a visit. (I lived in Atlanta during the Olympics and it was madness.) Blair: send me an email, you can grab my address from my profile.

  5. I think you should call it "Blair's Big Dumb Travelling Planet Algol Adventure," and be sure to include a stop in San Francisco...

In all seriousness, I wish I could make it up there for the events. I hope everything goes swimmingly!

  6. Wow, this sounds like a massive amount of fun. At first I was like AWESOME, but then, inevitably, jealously and despair set in when I realized I couldn't go.

    Life is so unfair.

/good luck and have yourself a blast!

  7. This is a great idea! If you do this, please let me know so I can add this to the list of games on the ITGW page. When you do, can I have a city/state, date/time and should I link to this announcement for anyone who wants more info?

  8. I'll play!

Speaking of public gaming spaces, Vancouver Red Box is organizing a public session Feb 24th @ Clubhouse Restaurant on 2nd Ave in their upstairs party room. If it works out as a venue, I'll let you know.

And as always, you're welcome to come play with us any time.
