How Would You Do a Bloodsport-style Scenario in Oldschool D&D?
I just watched Bloodsport, and I enjoyed it so much I want to do a Bloodsport-inspired scenario.
This is actually something that could be pretty cool under the Flailsnails paradigm.
Here's my current thoughts
- Is it going to be more like Mortal Combat, with the supernatural aspects of D&D, or a "Martial Class Only", no spells, no magic items, sort of thing?
- This screams for some sort of combat maneuver system. Ideally I'd cherry pick from a bunch of simple options and format/present them as a quick cheat sheet.
- Would NPC antagonists have abilities that PC don't have access to? i.e. a sumo wrestler with special fat-belly attack abilities?
- Armor or no armor?
- Bloodsport soundtrack music would be a must. KUMITE! KUMITE! KUMITE!
Great idea! I did something similar for my entry into this year's One Page Dungeon contest.
ReplyDeleteTHE BESTGA ME OF FITES ALLTIME IS WWE RAW DEAL CARD GAME. TO USE D&D I WOULD SAY YOU GET # ATTACKS IS EQUALS LEVEL AND # HITS YOU CAN TAKE EUQALS LEVEL AND A FIGHTER GETS LIKE +1 AND A MAGIC-USER GETS -1 AND A DWARF GETS +1 AND A ELF GETS -1MILLION. AND SOME GUYS THAT LIKE TO FITE GET A FINISHER MOVE AND ALSO EVERYPONE NEEDS SOME SPECIAL MOVES AND DEFENSES AND FOR THE ELFS A FUMBLE TABLE.
ReplyDeleteAND I FORGET TO
ReplyDeleteA HIT IS JUST ONEDAMAGE SO A 5TH LEVEL TAKES 5 HITS AND THEN MAYBE THE NEXT HITS ARE CRITICAL OR THE OTHER GUY (OR EVEN STRONG GIRL) CAN USE A FINISHER MOVE.
Actually, cards would be very damn good idea. The bosses would have more cards / draws... Shit, the whole game could be card-based for that matter... why not?
DeleteJust use the Deed Die system from Dungeon Crawl Classics. Or, hell, use DCC for the criticals and the fumbles as well.
ReplyDeleteIsn't The Fantasy Trip designed for 'arena' type combats?
ReplyDeleteI'd adapt jousting rules or one of the old monkish combat variants I recall from days past. Monkish Arena or some such thing.
ReplyDeleteUse the martial arts rules from Oriental Adventures http://oaproject.tripod.com/oama.html , treat them like proficiency slots or gain certain moves on level advancement. Why shouldn't there be 'magic'? Liu Kang hurled fireballs, Sindel could fly. Magic-User MA characters wouldn't exactly be pushovers. Magic Missile to the face, donkey kick to the balls. As for magic items... why not? Kung Lao had the 'vorpal boomerang hat' he threw. Don't be such a prude! Finishing moves should only apply when the loser is between 0 to -9 hp., and should just be a matter of player-improvised theatrics. Maybe one gruesome detail per/level. It'd be cool to have people roll up 3-5 characters at a time and throw 'em in the meat grinder... Hell, I dunno.
ReplyDeleteI played some "Mortal Kombat"-style Sci-Fantasy with AD&D some years ago and it was a real fun. We took the setting like die MK-TV-Series and mixed some "StarGate"-like elements with it. The rules were basically AD&D, but every fighter, monk, mage and something else had some "special attacks" (spells) to define their fighting style. It was very cool and I hope I can play this setting again once more.
ReplyDeleteCP2020 has a pretty good martial arts system. You might look there for inspiration.
ReplyDeleteI have now officially been coast-to-coast, seen the Pacific, Atlantic AND The Gulf of Mexico. I Am A Seasoned Traveler.
